travel europe germany schleswig holstein lubeck architecture

Like many other towns we saw in northern Germany, the historical architecture of old town Lubeck is a high level of fine brick masonry.
This is probably due to both an abundance of clay materials and a depletion of available lumber throughout much of historical Europe.
When wood is evident, it is often in the form of intricatly carved detail work.
Side-by-side homes with tall and detailed facades crowd along narrow cobblestone streets competing for attention.
Central archways often lead to allees or courtyards that provide light and air to interior homes and apartments.
While the facades offer great examples of masonry design, the warmth of individual expression is best experienced in the allees.
These allees of Lubeck turned out to be an inspiration for the central hall of my own Oregon residence.
